Chapter Eleven: The Plan

The Creature is talking to me again as I sleep.

There’s something about its words, its familiarity, its seductive, evil charm that pricks at my awareness.

It reminds me of someone…

I know it must be injecting my bloodstream with more drugs to keep my soul at bay. To keep my mind a blank slate that can be programmed for whatever purpose it requires.

But I also know that though my enemies have strengthened their control over me, it is not absolute.

The first time, I figured out a way to defy their orders by focusing my mind on the loop holes within their commands. Like a bug within a computer program that is benign and non-critical, but can be used to crash the whole system.

I used these loop holes to get Sophia out of our prison in the cavern, and let her go when Aella and Cloud came for her.

I figured out that if I sustained heavy enough injuries, my subconscious has a higher chance of countermanding the orders my conscious mind is following.

The problem is that my enemies figured it out too after losing Sophia that day.

They then put my body through torture after torture with different drug dosages to wall off this loop hole.

They almost killed me in the process.

I don’t know how long I was in a vegetative state; it might have been weeks or months.

The next time I awoke, I was sent on a new mission.

This time, I was almost totally unaware of what occurred during the mission itself, so I was unable to change any of my body’s actions. I can only piece together fragments of memories, distorted and vague, after all was said and done.

I know I led other mind-controlled soldiers into battle against an enclave of animal spirits. I know I killed many of them by my own hand.

I once read somewhere that there are people who have “blackouts.” Periods of time they lose themselves and their memories. After they wake up, they do not know what they did. Sometimes, all they do is sleepwalk. Sometimes, they harm themselves or others. Whether this ignorance absolves them of their actions is an ongoing debate in the court of law and psycho analysis.

For me, I know I am not absolved.

I do not absolve myself.

Although I cannot stop the actions of my body, I will fight for every sliver of escape, take back every shred of control.

I was able to deactivate the GPS tracer in the bullet I put into the Tiger King. That should buy him some time. If he’s smart, he’ll stay low.

It was all I could do to ameliorate my orders and actions.

One day, I will pay for all that I have done.

I do not fear that final judgement.

I do not fear death.

I will be ready when the end comes.

Until then, I will keep fighting.

I must.

For her.
